Chile has taken a significant step in the fight against child labor, forced labor, human trafficking, and modern slavery by assuming the presidency of the Alliance 8.7, also known as Alliance 8.7. This milestone was realized after a handover ceremony held at the International Labour Organization (ILO) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, where Chile assumed the responsibility of leading this important global collaboration platform.

Alliance 8.7 is recognized for its commitment to generating and exchanging information, practices, and lessons learned in the fight against these forms of labor exploitation. Its members include governments, international and regional organizations, employers, workers, and civil society, reflecting the broad collaboration necessary to address these complex challenges.

Chile’s leadership in this field has been acknowledged, particularly for its outstanding national policy against child labor, forced labor, and human trafficking. Since its invitation to join the Alliance in 2018 by the ILO, Chile has been an active member of regional initiatives such as the Regional Initiative Latin America and the Caribbean Free of Child Labor. Additionally, it has developed national strategies with the aim of eradicating these practices and protecting the most vulnerable, such as its National Strategy for the Eradication of Child Labor and Protection of Working Adolescents 2015-2025.

The presidency of Alliance 8.7 comes at a crucial moment for Chile, which recently chaired the ILO Governing Body.

This fact consolidates the country’s regional leadership in promoting the labor agenda and human rights, underscoring its commitment to democracy, multilateralism, and a gender perspective in the fight against these forms of exploitation. Assuming this responsibility not only strengthens Chile’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals but also highlights its ongoing dedication to advocating for human rights worldwide.
